DANCER TRANSITION RESOURCE CENTRE

Helping dancers make necessary transitions into, within, and from professional performing careers since 1985.

About The DTRC

Founded in 1985, the Dancer Transition Resource Centre (DTRC) is a national, charitable organization dedicated to helping dancers make necessary transitions into, within, and from professional performing careers.

Support

We also operate as a resource centre for the dance community and general public and support activities that improve the socioeconomic conditions of artists across the country.

Counselling

Moving to a new city, starting a family, establishing a company, going back to school –  these are just some of the many transitions dancers may make throughout their dance careers. Our counselling program provides practical guidance, and emotional and psychological support to dancers in transition.

Study Grants

DTRC offers a range of study and subsistence grants to help dancers address their present needs and pursue their future career goals.  Dancers can build transferable skills, explore second career options and undertake studies leading to parallel and second careers.

Advocacy

Visit our Staff and Representatives. As a national charitable organization, the Dancer Transition Resource Centre is the perfect place for artists to continue advocating for artists in order to create harmony and great change within the community.

Community Resources

DTRC has Regional Representatives in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax who are available to all dancers and interested members of the public. You can also find more information on our website and social media platforms.

What People Are Saying

DTRC has illuminated my career path, by providing a vital service to dancers in transition. The support, programs and entire staff at the DTRC have been instrumental to my journey. I’m immensely grateful!

The DTRC provides essential support the dance community.

Infiniment merci!

From start to finish, members of the DTRC have offered guidance and support about being an artist, from daily life skills, to company life, networking, taking care of our bodies and minds and learning to advocate for ourselves as professional artists in the world. I’m truly humbled by the strength and efficacy of this organization in Canada, especially after working in the USA and South Africa as a professional dancer. DTRC has empowered me to navigate this unique profession alongside my concurrent careers in a way that feels inspired, nurturing and confident.

With the help of the DTRC, and their generous funders, I was able to complete my business administration degree promptly after retiring from the stage. Upon completing this degree, I applied to law school and have recently begun my new journey as an aspiring lawyer. This opportunity would also not have been possible without the support and assistance of the DTRC. The DTRC has provided me with the essential funding and support to pursue different interests while dancing, obtain a university degree, and begin the next chapter of my new legal career. Thank you, DTRC!

DTRC has funded me in pivoting my career in a way that still uses my skill set but in a more sustainable way. They have always offered support and guidance and accommodated when possible. My time back at school would have been much more stressful, especially financially without the support of the DTRC.

The DTRC supported me in my 4th year Training as a Feldenkrais Method® practitioner. The granting process allowed me to articulate my goals in relationship to my Self-Image as an artist. I am especially grateful for the adaptability & steadiness of this support as my training was impacted by the uncertainty of the pandemic.

I am grateful for the support of the DTRC which has allowed me to embark upon a new chapter in my life. The application process was supportive and thoughtful and I really felt the staff cared about my journey and how they could best support me in my transition. The support from the DTRC has helped ease my fears about transitioning into a new career path and has helped me become excited about my future!

As an immigrant in Canada, my experience of DTRC has been a continue discovery. Not many countries can be proud of such a service specifically dedicated to an important moment of the life of a dancer. Being able to rely on this organisation has been overall encouraging and gave me all the knowledge and support needed to go through a partial transition in my career. DTRC contributed to the development and reshaping of my professional life, giving me the opportunity to further my education and integrate new skills to my profile. In a country where there is a great passion for the arts and a deep understanding of how to serve and support the life of an artist, as the one of any individual, DTRC just has to exist. Its place in the filed is crucial and determines the constant remodelling of our society. Thanks to DTRC, generations of dancers have grown and will keep growing with the certainty to fulfil their artistic career and be able to bring that experience in the next steps of their lives.

SAFIYA’S STORY

“I was delighted to discover all of the programs that the DTRC offers to dancers in transition. Receiving the Skills Grant to study ASL impacted my career as a Diversity and Inclusion Advocate with my artist union. The DTRC Career Counselling program allowed me to receive one-on-one support with a counsellor whose expertise and guidance helped me navigate my career options with confidence and clarity.

The Career Exploration Grant afforded me the opportunity to be trained as a Social Emotional Arts facilitator through the UCLA Arts and Healing program. This has been instrumental to my career journey as I became acutely aware of the importance of improving emotional well being in a diverse community work setting. Utilizing the training and skills programs offered by the DTRC has changed my life in so many positive ways.

I have benefited immensely from the services and programs that the DTRC has provided me over the last 10 years. The support I have received from the DTRC, ranged from career counseling, exploration, to developing new skills with enhanced training to apply to my career transition. The positive impact of these services has made my career journey a meaningful one. I can’t thank the DTRC enough for their help, guidance, and generosity.
